Mary, the Theotokos
Mary is the Mother of God because she is the Mother of Jesus, true God and true Man. Because of this, she more than anyone else can lead us to her Son, for no other like her knows who Jesus is, and no one knows how to relate with Him as well as she does. Mary is the Mother who, on hearing the shepherd’s words, understood immediately that the Child was not just “her Son”. “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and put it into practice” Jesus would say one day (Lk. 8:19-21). She, who for nine months had borne Him in her womb, knew how to listen to everyone the Lord allowed her to meet: the shepherds, the magi, Simeon and Anna… because each of them would “reveal” something about Jesus’ identity and mission.

New Year resolutions
Considering quitting smoking, consuming less alcohol, dieting, or any of the many resolutions that top the lists at this time of year?
New Year Resolutions – promises made to be broken, as someone once said. But just why is it that so many people consider changing the way they live when January 1 comes around?
It’s encouraging for the world that there is this deep-rooted desire to change, to improve, in the hearts of all – a need to be at peace with ourselves and with each other.
Can it be a coincidence that this desire surfaces shortly after the birth of Jesus into the world? (continue reading at this link)

Medjugorje message, December 2023
Dear children! I am carrying my Son Jesus to you to fill your hearts with peace, because he is peace. Little children, seek Jesus in the silence of your heart that he be born anew. The world needs Jesus, therefore seek him through prayer, because he gives himself daily to each of you.

God’s love... greater than our sins
Yes, God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may have may not be lost but may have eternal life. For God sent his Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but so that through him the world might be saved.

The Holy Souls and Christmas Day
The Medjugorje seer Mirjana Dragicevic-Soldo is reported to have said that Our Lady once told her when souls leave Purgatory and go to Heaven, most go on Christmas Day.
The writer Susan Tassone also claims that two saints and doctors of the Church, Alphonsus Liguori and Teresa of Avila, have said most souls are released from Purgatory on Christmas Day.
I haven’t been able to verify any of these claims.

A brighter of darker future?
Why do Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus into the world? Is it because we believe and hope in a better world to come, that peace can reign in all hearts and overcome the darkness that shadows all lives?
In her Medjugorje messages Our Lady says that prayer is the key to know the love of Jesus and so overcome all the misery in this world of sorrows. She also states that Satan is strong and wants to destroy hope in our hearts, and affirms that our peace and hope are in God.
She asks that our hope be hope for those hearts who do not have Jesus and to be her extended hands of love for all those who have become lost, and have no more faith and hope.
Can one of our New Year resolutions be just this; that with hope in our hearts we are able to extend the love of God to others, no matter who they are or how we perceive or judge them to be?
Dear children! In a special way, today I am calling you to prayer. Pray, little children, so that you may comprehend who you are and where you need to go. Be carriers of the good news and be people of hope. Be love for all those who are without love. Little children, you will be everything and will achieve everything only if you pray and are open to God’s will – to God who desires to lead you towards eternal life. I am with you and intercede for you from day to day before my Son Jesus. Thank you for having responded to my call. Medjugorje message November 25, 2014

Two planks
“In my efforts to escape from the dangers of this life and the abyss of sin, support me by your prayers, as by a plank, that from this world I may escape as one does from a shipwreck, leaving all behind.”
• Letter from Paulinus and Therasia to St Augustine of Hippo
1446: Christ instituted the sacrament of Penance for all sinful members of his Church: above all for those who, since Baptism, have fallen into grave sin, and have thus lost their baptismal grace and wounded ecclesial communion. It is to them that the sacrament of Penance offers a new possibility to convert and to recover the grace of justification. The Fathers of the Church present this sacrament as "the second plank [of salvation] after the shipwreck which is the loss of grace."

To whom does the sun belong?
A Slovak writer wrote a novel – To Whom Belongs the Sun? – which tells the story of a boy from a very poor family.
However, he did not know that they were poor, because they lived happily. He discovered his poverty at school, when the others started to call him poor.
So the boy asked his mother: “Why do people say that we are poor?”
He received this explanation: “Because this house does not belong to us, because these things here and these things there are not ours...”
The boy remained stunned. He did not know it.
He asked another, but decisive question: “And the sun, to whom does it belong?”
His mother’s answer delighted him deeply: “The sun belongs to the good God.”
This was the revelation of the fatherhood of God which, thereafter, carried him during his whole life.

Dogma of the Immaculate Conception
The writings of the Church Fathers, from the time of the Apostles, indicate a tradition that this teaching has always been part of the Christian deposit of faith. The dogma states that, from the moment of her conception in the womb of her mother St Anne, Our Blessed Lady was preserved from the stain of original sin, which the rest of mankind inherits due to the sin of Adam and Eve. Mary was filled totally with God’s grace, and thus being sinless was the worthy mother of Jesus Christ, who came to defeat sin. Mary stands as a sign of hope to the Christian that, one day, we will be in the presence of God, filled with grace and cleansed from every sin.

The truth of the Immaculate Conception is inherent in Sacred Scripture. It is implied in the story of the Fall, when sinful Eve is told that one day, one of her descendants will crush the head of the serpent. In the Annunciation account, St Luke uses a specific word, which we interpret as ‘full of grace,’ in the angel Gabriel’s greeting to Mary. This Greek word is in a certain tense, meaning she was always full of grace and always will be full of grace. Mary is the ‘Holy light on earth’s horizon, star of hope to fallen man, light amid a world of shadows, dawn of God’s redemptive plan’ (F. Caswall).

When I was a child...
I do it, so do countless others: that is, cast stones.
I still haven’t forgotten when, as a young child, I stoned another boy who lived across the street. It hurt him enough to report my rage to his parents, and for them to visit my home with a rightful complaint. But I can’t remember the reason why, as two young boys, we resorted to calling each other names and throwing stones.
Nowadays any stone throwing I resort to is of the accusative or judgmental kind, and that can be just as damaging, not only for the person I’m firing off at, but to my own self and soul as well. I guess there can be times for most people when we are plagued by destructive instincts and habits.
It is said that all wars start in the heart.
“When I was a child, I used to talk like a child, and think like a child, and argue like a child…” (1 Corinthians 13:11)… and though I am now a man I have still to leave some of my childish ways behind.

My December Rose
I know nothing about flowers, but this particular rose in my garden has intrigued me over the past couple of weeks. Why is it still in flower at this time of the year? I took this picture today on a very wet morning after several cold days, heavy frost and even a smattering of light snow. It’s the only flower on the bush. There are no signs of any others that may have bloomed recently. I hope it stays around until Friday.

Christmas colours
For Christians, the evergreen leaves, which don’t lose their colour or die during the winter, are seen as a powerful symbol of the eternal life promised by Jesus Christ in the gospels. The sharp, pointy leaves of holly call to mind the crown of thorns, and its red berries are seen as emblematic of the blood shed on the cross. The death and resurrection of Jesus has become associated with the vibrant red and green boughs.

Use this time and seek the grace of healing of your heart from God, so that you may see God and man with the heart. In praise of the Virgin Mother
In dangers, and difficulties and doubts, think of Mary. Call for Mary’s help. Do not let her name depart from your mind or your mouth, and to obtain the support of her prayer do not neglect the example of her life. Following her, you do not stray: asking her for help, you do not despair; thinking about her, you do not lose the way. You do not fall if she holds you; you have no anxiety if she protects you; with her for guide you do not grow tired; if she favours you, you arrive.

Know that the kingdom of God is near
Jesus told his disciples a parable. “Think of the fig tree and indeed every tree. As soon as you see them bud, you know that summer is now near. So with you when you see these things happening: know that the kingdom of God is near. I tell you solemnly, before this generation has passed away all will have taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my word will never pass away.” Luke 21 : 29-33

“When you return home… Build the Hill of Apparitions in one corner of your apartment or house. Furnish it with a small crucifix, a candle, the Bible, rosary beads and a kneeler. Feast of the Miraculous Medal
On November 27, 1989, during an apparition at the Blue Cross to the visionary Marija Pavlovic, Our Lady gave this message:

“These days, I want you to pray in a special way for the salvation of souls. Today is the feast day of the miraculous medal, and I want that you pray, in a special way, for the salvation of those people who are carrying this miraculous medal. I want you to spread the devotion and the carrying of this medal, so that more souls may be saved, and that you pray in a special way.”

• On a personal note I was once very blessed to speak privately with Marija when she made a visit to the UK. At the end of the meeting, she put her hand in her purse and gave me several small, gold-coloured medals – Miraculous Medals – saying they had been blessed by Our Lady during one of her apparitions. I can vouch for several other blessings and miracles associated with those medals when they were passed on to other people.

• In November 1830, Mary appeared for a second time to St. Catherine at the Rue de Bac Chapel in Paris. This time she was standing on a globe, with dazzling rays of light streaming from her outstretched hands. Framing the apparition was an inscription: “O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.” When Mary spoke to St. Catherine, she said “Have a medal struck upon this model. Those who wear it will receive great graces, especially if they wear it around the neck. Those who repeat this prayer with devotion will be, in a special manner, under the protection of the Mother of God. Graces will be abundantly bestowed upon those who have confidence.”

If you had only understood the message of peace
As Jesus drew near Jerusalem and came in sight of the city he she’d tears over it and said, “If you in your turn had only understood the message of peace! But, alas, it is hidden from your eyes! Yes, a time is coming when your enemies will raise fortifications all round you, when they will encircle you and hem you in from every side; they will dash you and the children inside your walls to the ground; they will leave no stone standing on another within you – and all because you did not recognise your opportunity when God offered it!”

Cecilia, patron saint of musicians
Cecilia is one of the most famous of the Roman martyrs. According to legend, she was a young Christian of high rank betrothed to a Roman named Valerian. Through her influence, Valerian was converted, and was martyred along with his brother.

The legend about Cecilia’s death says that after being struck three times on the neck with a sword, she lived for three days, and asked the pope to convert her home into a church.
[Notice the serrated edge of the plate which the viola’s strings attach to, and how it points down to Cecilia’s neck.]

Since the time of the Renaissance she has usually been portrayed with a viola or a small organ.

The scribes and the Pharisees occupy the chair of Moses. You must therefore do what they tell you and listen to what they say; but do not be guided by what they do: since they do not practise what they preach.
